DIVE IN - THE 2019 - 2020 PILOT
Between Nov 2019 and June 2020 we ran a free structured mentor programme for students from the University of the West of England (UWE).
Students were paired with professionals from Rolls-Royce, followed a structured mentoring relationship guide and attended three specific DIVE In events hosted in partnership with SEO London and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Here we give a summary of the year.
If you are interested in taking part in a future programme, or think we can help you with setting up your own mentorship programme, please get in touch.
“The framework helped me to develop a mind-set of how to set goals and work to achieve them.”
“I am grateful to have received support with transitioning to the UK.”
For the first event we teamed up with SEO-London who provided a 2-day development event opportunity for engineering undergraduates on our Dive In. mentorship programme. The event was free for students to attend and was designed to give participants an insight into the engineering industry, equipping them with the necessary skills to tackle the application process.
On the 27th November 2019 we facilitated early career mentor volunteers from Rolls-Royce Plc to join UWE students for a Meet Your Mentor. Together with the Female Undergraduate of the Year Alumni Network (FUYAN) from Rolls-Royce we worked to match 8 pairs for mentorship based on their experiences, interests and ambitions. The event was a great opportunity to melt the ice between the students and professionals. Both the professional and student groups had a separate short training session about how to be effective mentors and mentees, respectively.
Starting in person, but moving online due to COVID-19 the mentors and mentees sessions followed the Mentorship Framework pack which we produced and provided to all participants. With the FUYAN group we supported the mentors with their sessions with fortnightly group conference calls and individual drop-in calls to review progress.
The final DIVE IN & BEYOND celebration and feedback session was delivered over a webinar where 21 participants joined the discussion to share their experiences and takeaways from the programme.
“I gave advice that I realised that I needed to take myself.”
"I learned to listen more, be quiet and actively listen by quieting your own brain.”
